Before you start troubleshooting, run the actual test so you know what's broken.

Windows 11

macOS

  1. Open System Settings > Sound > Output.

Chromebook

iPhone

Android

  2. Open Settings > Sound & vibration > check any connected Bluetooth device isn't intercepting audio.

Bluetooth

(Windows)

  5. Also check Settings > System > Sound > Troubleshoot common sound problems, Windows' built-in tool catches several config issues automatically.

How audio output actually gets routed

Modern computers rarely have one audio output, they have five or six. Internal speakers, a headphone jack, a USB headset, an HDMI or DisplayPort connection to a monitor, a Bluetooth speaker and sometimes a virtual device installed by conferencing or recording software all appear as separate outputs. The operating system picks one, apps can override that choice individually, and connecting a new device silently reshuffles the priority order.

This is why sound so often disappears the moment you plug in a monitor or dock. The display announces that it supports audio, the system dutifully switches output to it, and the monitor either has no speakers or has them turned down. Nothing is broken, the sound is simply going somewhere you cannot hear it. Checking the output device list before anything else resolves a large share of no-sound reports.

Per-app volume, the setting people forget

Both Windows and macOS allow individual applications to have their own volume level, and browsers add a third layer by allowing per-tab muting. A single accidental click can mute one app permanently while everything else plays fine, which makes the problem look far stranger than it is.

  • On Windows, open the Volume mixer from the sound settings and check every slider, not just the master.
  • In any browser, look for a small speaker icon on the tab itself, right click the tab and choose unmute site if present.
  • Video players, games and conferencing apps almost always have an internal volume control separate from the system one.
  • Streaming sites often remember a muted state per site, so muting one video mutes them all on that domain.

Isolating hardware from software in three tests

Before opening driver settings, three quick comparisons will tell you whether the fault is physical.

  1. Play sound through headphones in the same port. Working headphones mean the port, driver and system audio are all fine and the speakers or their connection are at fault.
  2. Play sound from a different application. If one app is silent and another is not, it is a software setting, never a speaker fault.
  3. Play sound from a different device entirely, a phone connected to the same speakers. Silence there points squarely at the speakers or cable.

Our speaker test is useful here because it plays left, right and stereo tones separately. A channel that is silent in isolation but sounds present in a stereo mix is a classic sign of a partially inserted 3.5mm jack or a damaged cable, and it is very easy to miss when listening to music.

Keeping audio reliable long term

A few small habits prevent most repeat failures. Set your preferred output device explicitly rather than relying on automatic switching, and check it again after connecting a dock or monitor. Keep Bluetooth speakers charged, since low battery causes some models to stay connected while producing no sound at all. Unplug and inspect 3.5mm cables occasionally, the connector near the plug is the most common failure point on any audio cable.

  • Avoid installing multiple audio enhancement utilities, they conflict and produce silence or distortion.
  • Note the driver version that works before updating, so a rollback is straightforward if the new one misbehaves.
  • Test both channels after any hardware change rather than assuming stereo is intact.
  • If you use a dock, connect audio directly to the computer for critical calls, docks are a frequent source of intermittent audio dropouts.

Common questions about missing sound

Why did sound stop after connecting a monitor?

The monitor advertised audio support over HDMI or DisplayPort and the system switched output to it. If the monitor has no speakers, or its volume is down, you hear nothing. Change the output device back to your speakers or headphones, and set it explicitly so the system stops switching automatically.

Why does only one speaker play?

Nearly always a physical connection. A 3.5mm plug that is not fully inserted contacts only one channel, and a cable damaged near the connector does the same. Test with the left, right and stereo tones in our speaker test, then check the balance slider in sound settings before assuming a speaker has failed.

Do I need to reinstall the audio driver?

Only if the device is missing or flagged in Device Manager, or if sound broke immediately after an update. Uninstalling the device and restarting lets Windows reinstall a clean driver automatically, which is safer and quicker than hunting for a download, and it resolves most driver-related silence.

Why is Bluetooth audio delayed?

Wireless audio carries inherent latency from encoding and buffering, typically well over a tenth of a second. That is unnoticeable for music but obvious on video and unusable for games. Video players often compensate automatically, while for gaming or editing a wired connection remains the only reliable answer.

A quick checklist before an important call or presentation

Audio failures are far easier to fix five minutes early than thirty seconds late. This short routine catches almost everything that commonly goes wrong with playback.

  1. Connect any dock, monitor or headset first, then check which output device the system has selected.
  2. Play a short clip and confirm you hear both left and right channels, not just one.
  3. Check the per-application volume for the app you will actually use, not only the master slider.
  4. If you plan to share a video, confirm the meeting app is set to share computer sound as well as the screen.
  5. Keep a wired pair of headphones nearby as an instant fallback if a wireless device misbehaves.

Doing this in the same order each time builds a habit that takes under a minute, and it removes the most common cause of a presentation stalling in front of an audience.
