Wi-Fi troubleshooting: a practical guide

Wi-Fi problems usually fall into three buckets: nothing connects, it connects but there's no internet, or it connects but is slow or drops out. This guide separates those cases so you're not guessing.

Before you start troubleshooting, run the actual test so you know what's broken.

Run the Network Test

Start by measuring the actual problem

Before changing settings, get a baseline. Run our Network Test to check your download speed, latency and jitter. Write the numbers down, then compare after each fix below so you know what actually helped.

Quick checks first

  1. Restart your router and modem: unplug both for 30 seconds, plug the modem in first, wait a minute, then the router.
  2. Restart the device having trouble, half of persistent Wi-Fi issues are a stuck network stack on the device, not the network.
  3. Check if other devices on the same network have the same problem. If only one device struggles, the fault is local to it.
  4. Move closer to the router temporarily to rule out distance and interference.
  5. Check your ISP's status page or app for a known outage in your area.

'Connected' but no internet

This means your device has a link to the router, but the router either has no internet or isn't passing it through.

  1. Check if other devices on the same Wi-Fi can browse. If none can, the problem is the router or the ISP connection, not your device.
  2. Look at the modem's lights, a solid "internet" or "online" light should be lit; blinking or off usually means no signal from the ISP.
  3. Try connecting a computer directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable, bypassing the router entirely, to isolate whether the router is the problem.
  4. On Windows, run Settings > Network & internet > Status > Network troubleshooter.
  5. On macOS, hold Option and click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar to see detailed diagnostics, or open Wireless Diagnostics from Spotlight.

Slow speeds or frequent dropouts

Rule out interference and distance

  • Walls, floors, microwaves, and baby monitors can all degrade a 2.4GHz signal, try the 5GHz band if your router offers both.
  • Move the router to a central, elevated, open spot rather than a closet or behind a TV.
  • Too many devices on one band can saturate it, check your router's connected devices list for anything unexpected pulling bandwidth.

Check for channel congestion

  1. If you're in an apartment building with many networks nearby, your router may be on a crowded Wi-Fi channel.
  2. Open your router's admin page (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and look for a Wireless or Channel setting.
  3. Set the channel to "Auto" if it isn't already, most modern routers pick a clearer channel automatically.

Update firmware and drivers

  • Check your router admin page for a firmware update option, outdated firmware causes real, documented stability bugs.
  • On Windows, update the Wi-Fi adapter driver through Device Manager > Network adapters.
  • On macOS, keep the OS itself updated, Wi-Fi driver fixes ship as part of system updates.

Device won't see the network at all

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi and confirm Wi-Fi is toggled on.
  2. Click "Show available networks" to refresh the list.
  3. If it's missing entirely, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter and choose "Enable device" if it's disabled.

macOS

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and confirm Wi-Fi is on.
  2. Open System Settings > Wi-Fi and check the network isn't in a "forgotten" or blocked state.

Android and iPhone

  1. Toggle Airplane mode on, wait five seconds, then off, this resets the radio cleanly.
  2. Forget the network under Wi-Fi settings, then reconnect and re-enter the password.

When it's a hardware fault

Suspect actual hardware failure when:

  • The router's lights show a hardware error pattern (check the manual for what a red or repeatedly-blinking light means on your specific model).
  • A factory reset and firmware update don't change anything, and the problem persists across every connected device.
  • The router is more than 4-5 years old and struggles even with few devices connected, aging hardware simply can't handle modern traffic loads and Wi-Fi standards.
  • One specific device fails to get a good signal everywhere in the house while others are fine there, that device's Wi-Fi antenna or adapter may be the actual fault, not the network.

If you've isolated the problem to your ISP connection rather than your own equipment, contact them directly, no amount of router troubleshooting fixes a fault on their end of the line.
