Overview
Video calls fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your camera or microphone more often than people expect. A frozen video feed, choppy audio, or a call that keeps dropping and reconnecting is usually a network problem, not a hardware one. This test measures the three numbers that actually predict how a call will feel: latency, jitter, and download speed, and gives you a plain-language rating of whether your current connection is ready for a call.
Run the test right before an important meeting if you can, especially if you're on Wi-Fi, a shared home network, or an unfamiliar connection like a hotel or coffee shop. Network conditions change from minute to minute depending on what else is using your connection, so a result from yesterday or even an hour ago doesn't guarantee the same experience now.
The test also reads any connection information your browser exposes directly, such as an estimated effective connection type, which can offer an extra hint about whether you're on a fast, stable link or a constrained one.
How to read your results
Latency
Latency, shown in milliseconds, is the round-trip time for a small request to reach a server and come back. Lower is always better. Under 100ms feels essentially instant in conversation, 100 to 200ms introduces a small but noticeable delay, and anything above 200ms starts to make normal back-and-forth conversation feel awkward, with people frequently talking over each other.
Jitter
Jitter measures how much that latency bounces around between individual measurements, also in milliseconds. Video and audio calling software has to buffer incoming data to smooth out small timing variations, and high jitter forces it to buffer more, which adds its own delay and can cause audio to crackle or video to stutter even when average latency looks fine.
Download speed
This is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and reflects how much data your connection can pull down in a short burst. Video calls don't need huge amounts of bandwidth compared to, say, streaming a 4K movie, but they do need a stable minimum available at all times, which is why a saturated connection with many devices active can hurt call quality even if the plan's advertised speed is high.
Overall rating
The tool combines all three measurements into a simple rating: good for video calls, marginal with possible issues, or poor with likely stuttering. Treat marginal or poor ratings as a signal to troubleshoot before joining an important call rather than finding out mid-meeting.
Troubleshooting
If your results are worse than expected, work through these steps:
- Run the test again after a minute or two, since a single bad reading can just be a brief spike in network activity.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired ethernet connection if possible, which typically cuts both latency and jitter noticeably.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, or streaming on any device sharing your network before an important call.
- Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or switch to the 5GHz band if your router supports it, since it's generally less congested than 2.4GHz.
- Restart your router and modem, which clears temporary congestion and reconnects you to a potentially less crowded channel.
- Close other browser tabs and applications that quietly use bandwidth in the background, such as auto-updating apps or other open video calls.
- If results stay poor across multiple tests and times of day, contact your ISP, since consistently high latency or low speed relative to your plan can indicate a line or equipment problem on their end.
Why calls suffer even on 'fast' internet
A common source of confusion is having a plan advertised at 200 or 500 Mbps and still experiencing choppy video calls. Advertised speed describes maximum throughput under ideal conditions, useful for downloading large files quickly, but it says nothing about latency or jitter. A satellite internet connection, for example, can offer respectable download speeds while still suffering from latency well above 500ms due to the physical distance signals travel to and from orbit, which makes real-time conversation feel consistently delayed no matter how fast files download.
Router quality and Wi-Fi congestion matter just as much as your ISP plan. A house full of smart devices, neighbors' overlapping Wi-Fi networks, and an aging router can all introduce latency spikes and jitter that a wired connection to the same ISP wouldn't show at all.
Preparing for an important call
If you have a critical meeting or interview coming up, run this test the day before and again about 15 minutes beforehand. Testing the day before gives you time to fix a genuinely broken connection, like a router that needs a firmware update or an ISP outage in your area, while testing right before the call catches temporary issues like a household member starting a large download at the wrong moment.
If your results are marginal and you can't fix the underlying network in time, consider joining the call with your video off and audio only, since audio requires far less consistent bandwidth than video and is much more forgiving of moderate jitter and latency.

Is my internet fast enough for Zoom?
Zoom recommends at least 1.5 Mbps down and up for one-on-one HD video calls, and around 3 Mbps for group calls, but latency and jitter matter just as much as raw speed.
