Computer running slow? Diagnose the real cause

A slow computer is rarely one single thing. Work through this in order and you will usually find the real bottleneck within ten minutes.

Before you start troubleshooting, run the actual test so you know what's broken.

Run the CPU Benchmark

Quick checks first

  1. Restart the machine. Sounds obvious, but weeks of uptime pile up background processes, memory leaks and pending updates that quietly eat resources.
  2. Close browser tabs. Modern browsers can easily use several gigabytes of memory across 30+ open tabs, especially with video or social media sites open.
  3. Check for a pending update or scan. Windows Update, antivirus scans and cloud sync clients (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) often run intensive background work without warning.
  4. Unplug unnecessary USB devices. Some external drives and hubs cause driver conflicts that spike CPU usage.

Work out which resource is actually maxed out

Slowness has four usual suspects: CPU, memory (RAM), storage, and network. Each one feels different and is fixed differently, so identify the real cause before you spend money or time on the wrong fix.

Windows 11

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Click the Performance tab and watch CPU, Memory, Disk and Ethernet/Wi-Fi usage for 30 seconds while the slowness happens.
  3. If CPU sits near 100%, click the Processes tab, sort by CPU, and see what's using it. A single runaway process is easy to end; if many small processes add up, that points to genuine hardware limits.
  4. If Disk usage sits at 100% while CPU is low, that's a storage bottleneck, common with an aging hard drive or a nearly full SSD.
  5. If Memory usage is consistently above 85 to 90%, Windows is paging to disk, which feels like everything freezing for a second at a time.

macOS

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or search with Spotlight.
  2. Check the CPU tab for processes using a large percentage, and the Memory tab for Memory Pressure. A yellow or red memory pressure graph means you need more RAM or fewer open apps.
  3. Check the Disk tab for heavy read/write activity, which often means Spotlight is reindexing or Time Machine is backing up.

Chromebook

  1. Open the built-in Task Manager with Shift+Esc while in a Chrome window.
  2. Sort by CPU or Memory to find the tab or extension responsible.
  3. Chromebooks with 4GB of RAM or less struggle with more than a handful of tabs plus a Play Store app running at once. Closing Android apps in the background often frees up noticeable resources.

Fixing a memory bottleneck

  • Disable startup programs you don't need. On Windows, Task Manager > Startup apps; on macOS, System Settings > General > Login Items.
  • Uninstall or disable browser extensions you don't actively use, they run in every tab.
  • Run our Memory Benchmark to see how much RAM your browser can actually access and how fast it reads and writes.
  • If you're consistently near your RAM ceiling, adding memory (on machines that support it) is one of the cheapest performance upgrades available.

Fixing a storage bottleneck

A drive that's more than 90% full slows down dramatically because the operating system has less room to write temporary files and manage free space efficiently.

Windows 11

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage to see what's using space.
  2. Use Storage Sense to automatically clear temporary files.
  3. Check whether your drive is an HDD or SSD: right-click the drive in File Explorer > Properties, or check Task Manager > Performance > Disk. An HDD is a common cause of overall sluggishness even with plenty of free space.

macOS

  1. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage to see a breakdown and recommendations.

Fixing a CPU or GPU bottleneck

  • Check for thermal throttling. A CPU that overheats will deliberately slow itself down; see our laptop overheating guide.
  • Update graphics drivers, especially before or after a Windows feature update.
  • Run our GPU Test to check rendering headroom if the slowness shows up mainly during video, games or design apps.
  • If your CPU benchmark score is far below the typical result for your specific model, that can point to throttling, a BIOS power setting, or in rare cases a failing component rather than "just being slow because it's old."

When it might be your network, not your computer

Streaming buffering, slow page loads and laggy cloud apps often get blamed on the computer when the real issue is the connection. Run our Network Test to measure download speed, latency and jitter, and compare it against what your plan promises.

When it's a hardware fault

  • Slowness combined with clicking noises from the drive, frequent crashes, or files that won't open usually means a failing hard drive. Back up immediately.
  • Slowness that appears suddenly after a fall or spill, or comes with fan noise that never settles down, suggests a hardware or thermal problem rather than software bloat.
  • If your CPU or memory benchmark scores are dramatically below what your hardware should achieve even after a clean restart, get it checked by a technician.
  • Laptops older than 5 to 6 years with a mechanical hard drive usually see the single biggest improvement from an SSD upgrade, often more than a new CPU would provide.
