Before you start troubleshooting, run the actual test so you know what's broken.

Run the Benchmark CPU

Controlli rapidi prima

macOS

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or search with Spotlight.

  • Disable startup programs you don't need. On Windows, Task Manager > Startup apps; on macOS, System Settings > General > Login Items.

Windows 11

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage to see what's using space.
  2. Usa Sensore memoria per cancellare automaticamente i file temporanei.
  3. Check whether your drive is an HDD or SSD: right-click the drive in File Explorer > Properties, or check Task Manager > Performance > Disk. An HDD is a common cause of overall sluggishness even with plenty of free space.

macOS

  1. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage to see a breakdown and recommendations.

Slow is a symptom, not a diagnosis

A computer only has four resources that can run out: processor time, memory, storage throughput and network bandwidth. Every slowdown traces back to one of them, and each has a completely different remedy. Adding memory to a machine bottlenecked on a mechanical hard drive changes nothing, and replacing the drive on a machine that is short of memory helps far less than expected. Measuring first is not optional, it is the whole job.

Open the task manager or activity monitor and watch it during the slowdown, not afterwards. The resource sitting near one hundred percent while everything feels sluggish is your bottleneck. If none of them is near its limit yet the machine still feels slow, suspect thermal throttling, where the processor deliberately reduces its speed to control heat.

The usual suspects, in order of likelihood

On the machines people describe as slow, the same handful of causes come up repeatedly.

  • A nearly full drive. Once free space drops below roughly ten percent, both Windows and macOS slow considerably because they lose room for temporary files and virtual memory.
  • Too many browser tabs. Each modern tab can consume hundreds of megabytes, and thirty tabs will exhaust memory on an eight gigabyte machine on its own.
  • Startup programs. Software that launches with the system and then sits in the background is the classic cause of a machine that is slow from the moment it boots.
  • A mechanical hard drive. This is the single largest performance difference in older machines, and an SSD upgrade transforms them.
  • Background updates and indexing, which are temporary but can make a machine unusable for an hour after a major update.
  • Dust and heat, which cause throttling that looks exactly like a software problem.

Changes ranked by impact for the effort

If you only have thirty minutes, spend it in this order. The list is deliberately ordered by how much speed you get back per minute invested.

  1. Restart. Uptime measured in weeks accumulates memory leaks and stuck processes that nothing else clears.
  2. Trim startup programs to the few you genuinely need at login.
  3. Free disk space until at least fifteen percent of the drive is available.
  4. Close or suspend unused browser tabs, and remove extensions you no longer use.
  5. Check for a runaway process that is consuming the processor constantly, and investigate anything you do not recognise.
  6. Clean the vents so the machine can maintain full clock speed under load.

Only after those, consider hardware. A storage upgrade to an SSD and a memory increase to sixteen gigabytes are the two changes that reliably extend the useful life of an otherwise capable machine by several years, and both are usually far cheaper than replacement.

Keeping the machine fast after you fix it

Performance decays gradually, so a small maintenance habit prevents the slow slide back. Once a month, review installed programs and remove what you no longer use, check the startup list has not grown, and confirm free disk space is still healthy. Restart at least weekly rather than only closing the lid.

  • Keep large media and archives on an external or cloud drive rather than the system disk.
  • Avoid running more than one security suite, they conflict and both scan every file access.
  • Empty the downloads folder and trash regularly, they hide tens of gigabytes on most machines.
  • Benchmark occasionally so you have a baseline, a slowdown you can measure is a slowdown you can fix.

Common questions about slow computers

Will more memory make my computer faster?

Only if memory is the bottleneck. Watch memory usage during a slowdown, and if it sits near capacity while the system writes constantly to disk, more memory will help enormously. If usage is comfortable and the processor is pinned instead, extra memory changes nothing at all. Measure first, then buy.

Do cleaner and optimiser apps help?

Rarely, and several make things worse by adding their own background services, aggressive scanning and registry changes with no measurable benefit. Everything genuinely useful they do, clearing temporary files and managing startup items, is already built into Windows and macOS and is safer there.

How long should a computer stay fast?

A machine with a solid state drive and enough memory should feel much the same after five years as it did new, provided it stays clean and cool. Sharp decline usually points to a specific cause, a full drive, thermal throttling or accumulated startup software, rather than age itself.

Is a fresh installation worth it?

It is the most reliable software fix and the most disruptive. Try the ordered steps above first, since they resolve the majority of cases in under an hour. If the machine is still slow with a clean startup list, plenty of free space and healthy temperatures, a reinstall will help, but back up thoroughly and confirm you have drivers and licences to hand before starting.
