Verifique as permissões do navegador e do aplicativo
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
Chromebook
- Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera.
- For Safari specifically, go to Settings > Safari > Camera and set it to Ask or Allow.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions.
- Defina Câmera como Permitir.
- For Chrome, open Chrome > Settings > Site settings > Camera and check the site isn't blocked.
Why a camera stops working in the first place
A webcam is one of the few pieces of hardware that four different layers all have to agree on before you see a picture: the physical device, the operating system driver, the privacy permission layer, and finally the app or browser tab asking for the stream. If any one of those four says no, the result looks identical from the outside, a black rectangle or an error message that tells you almost nothing. That is why random fixes rarely help and why working through the layers in order is faster than guessing.
The single most common cause is exclusive access. On Windows and macOS only one application can hold a camera stream at a time in most situations, so a video call app left running in the background, even minimised to the system tray, will keep the sensor locked. Close Zoom, Teams, Slack, Discord, OBS, Camera app and any browser tab with a meeting open, then try again. The second most common cause is a permission that was denied once, months ago, on a page you no longer remember visiting, because browsers remember that choice permanently per site.
Driver and firmware problems come third. Windows Update occasionally replaces a working manufacturer driver with a generic one, and some laptop vendors ship a companion utility that manages a physical privacy shutter in software. Genuine hardware failure is last on the list, and it is far rarer than people assume, usually a loose internal ribbon cable rather than a dead sensor.
A five-minute diagnostic order that actually works
Rather than jumping between settings screens, run this sequence. Each step rules out an entire category, so by the end you know precisely which layer is at fault even if you have not fixed it yet.
- Open our camera test in a fresh browser tab. If the picture appears here, the hardware and drivers are fine and the problem lives in the other app.
- If the test shows nothing, open your operating system's own Camera app. A picture there proves the browser is the blocker, not the device.
- If neither works, reboot once. A reboot clears stuck device locks that no settings screen exposes.
- Still nothing after a reboot? Open Device Manager or System Information and check the camera is even listed as present.
- Not listed at all means driver or hardware. Listed with a warning icon means driver. Listed cleanly but still black means permissions or another app holding the stream.
Write down which step failed. That single fact tells a support technician more than a paragraph of description, and it stops you reinstalling drivers for a problem that was really a permission toggle.
Fixing a camera that works everywhere except one app
This is extremely common with conferencing software. Zoom, Teams, Meet and Discord each keep their own device preference, and each caches the device list at launch. If you plugged in a webcam after opening the app, the app may never notice it exists. Quit the application completely, including from the system tray or menu bar, then relaunch with the camera already connected.
- In Zoom, open Settings then Video and pick the correct camera from the dropdown rather than trusting the default.
- In Microsoft Teams, go to Settings then Devices, and remember that the desktop app and the web version keep separate device choices.
- In Google Meet, click the three dots during a call, choose Settings then Video, and check both the camera and the send resolution.
- In Discord, open User Settings then Voice and Video and use the Test Video button, which shows a preview without joining a call.
- In OBS or Streamlabs, a source that grabbed the camera earlier will hold it exclusively, delete or deactivate the source before using another app.
If the app still shows a black frame after selecting the right device, look for a hardware acceleration or GPU setting inside the app and switch it off temporarily. On older graphics drivers, hardware-accelerated video capture is a known source of black frames while every other indicator says the camera is running.
Preventing it from happening again
Once the camera is working, a few habits keep it that way. Standardise on one conferencing app where you can, close the others fully rather than minimising them, and check the camera five minutes before an important call instead of thirty seconds before it. If your laptop has a physical shutter, leave it in a consistent position so you always know its state at a glance.
- Keep graphics and chipset drivers current, but avoid third-party driver updater tools, they install mismatched packages more often than they help.
- If a Windows update breaks the camera, the rollback option in Device Manager restores the previous driver in under a minute.
- Grant camera permission only to sites you trust, and review the list occasionally in your browser's site settings.
- Bookmark the camera test so a pre-meeting check takes seconds rather than a search.
Finally, treat lighting and framing as part of a working camera. Many people conclude their webcam is faulty when the real issue is a bright window behind them forcing the sensor to expose for the background and leaving their face in silhouette. Move the strongest light source in front of you rather than behind, and the same hardware will look dramatically better without a single setting change.
